Vintage Japanese silver treasure ship sculpture by Takehiko Seki. The ship is crafted using very high standard 985 Japanese silver with some of the “treasure” gilded. The sails are decorated with gold and the gunwhales, pennant etc are also gilded. The ships figure head is the mythical Phoenix bird. The stern is stamped Silver 985 and has the sculptors name. The boat is 12cms long, 8 cms wide and 13cms high. The ocean is silver plated and measures 16cms x 9cms.
The sculpture is mounted on a hardwood plinth with the dedication “To John Meneer from Tokyo Marine Co Ltd”. The plinth forms the base to the hardwood display case. The case measures 22.5 cms high x 21.5 cms long x 15cms depth with a lift off top.
These ships were bought as high quality gifts often used as presentations. Another was used to commemorate the Launching of MS “Nagoya” by the Hitachi Ship Building and engineering Company Ltd.
The Sculptor: Takehiko Seki was born in 1908, and in 1922 moved to Tokyo to become the apprentice of silversmith, Tajima Katsuyuki. Seki perfected his art under master Kosaka Munehiro, and established himself as a bona fide Master Silversmith in 1936.
Legend: In Japanese mythology this treasure ship is a Takarabune. It is sailed through the heavens for three days only, at the time of the new year. It brings happiness and good fortune and is sailed by the seven lucky gods.
Condition: Excellent throughout. There is some tarnishing in parts of the ocean waves.
